Very few were managed by pain specialists and nearly half received inadequate pain management. Although differences were observed between the 16 countries, we have documented that chronic pain is a major health care problem in Europe that needs to be taken more seriously." A Conversation with Dr. Chan Gunn

I'd like to include an excerpt from an interchange with Dr. Chan Gunn. Of course, you should check out his website: www.istop.org . He's a brilliant pain management physician. I must say that his work has influenced our direction early on in our research and development program. This excerpt leads to his assessment of Myoguide's place in pain management.

"Although my early research into needle reflex-stimulation was guided by EMG, I have since then depended on physical signs of neuropathy. My early paper on "Tenderness and Motor Points" (Journal of Bones and Joint Surgery,Vol. 58A, No.6 Sept. 1976) described the segmental nature and level of spinal trauma which was the beginning of an important, new medical subject--neuropathic pain. It described EMG evidence of neuropathy in the nerves to the tender muscles : increased insertion activity, polyphasic action potentials, prolonged motor action potentials, etc.

Many physicians are still unaware of the true nature of neuropathic pain. Your apparatus would help explain it. I believe it would also help in finding and documenting the sites for dry needling in intramuscular stimulation (IMS). You would have a much larger audience for this. "

This really validates our work developing Myoguide as an essential tool for finding, and allowing documentation of, these sites. Myoguide makes finding these sites as straight forward as possible. Medica 2010 was a fantastic opportunity to catch up with old friends, contacts, and build important relationships through meetings. We are grateful to the Canadian Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (EDT), and Messe Düsseldorf (Canada) for their support during Medica. It was an extremely productive exhibition. Funny Stories at Exhibitions, or Tales from the Great Beyond

There are always collections of stories coming from conferences and exhibitions we attend. This tale comes from the AANEM 2010 meeting: Food was served in the exhibit hall, which probably is not too good an idea, other than the attendees will be there to enjoy some food, drink and look at the exhibits. Good thought in theory, but not so much so in practice. Let's just say that one of our admirers ended up spilling an entire cup of hot coffee into one of our Myoguide demo units. I'm happy to report that Myoguide enjoyed the coffee, but needed to be drained. Myoguide passed the spill test with flying colours, and continued to work well after the bath. We do use a waterproof speaker, and it is sealed to the enclosure when Myoguide is assembled. The front Lexan panel seals all the switches, as well. Let's just say thanks for the real world test, but please do not try at home

AANEM Conference

Intronix interacted with many of the clinicians and exhibitors attending the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine Conference. Myoguide was well accepted and we were fortunate enough to be able to discuss many possibilities for cooperative projects. We are looking forward to following up many leads and inquiries. Our newest version of Myoguide includes advanced features such as "stimulation pause". This feature halts stimulation while maintaining the stimulation parameters. Simulation continues with a simple button press. A new brighter display is also employed. We are looking forward to a new round of clinical work as well as employing Myoguide in a new research project. We are interested in supporting work investigating improved treatment efficacy using Myoguide guided injection. More on this soon.

This is where PRP is injected in into damaged tissue that had led an area into pain, discomfort, and reduced use. Therapy with botulinum toxin should be individualized for the patient and the clinician. The equipment needs should be determined according to the needs of the patient, the clinician's training, and the anatomic target for injection. Myoguide is an essential tool for neuromodulator injections.

For example, the flexor digitorum sublimis (FDS), is nearly impossible to locate without electromyographic guidance. We've changed the look of the Intronix Website. We wanted to improve the flow of information on the site, and make it easier to find the products. Updated Java subroutines make the product page more interesting, compact, and improve the overall flow.

Myoguide Back in the Clinics

We were back in the clinics with our improved Myoguide needle EMG guided injection system. Non-exisitant noise, and unbelievably good EMG audio fidelity. Crisp and clear signals on the LCD display. The MUTE function worked well and was a welcomed addition to the operational features. We carried out 20-30 needle EMG guided injections, with excellent results. 2 stimulation location sites. The stimulator worked very well, and was more than impressive. Several Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections using Myoguide needle EMG guidance. PRP uses the patient's own blood, which is processed and spun down where the plasma, white blood cells and platelets are separated. Injection of these components can lead to soft tissue healing and repair. Overall a great session in the clinics. We shot most of the encounters in HD video. We'll be creating video instruction demos to illustrate Myoguide features and show applications.

Check out the video of the patient encounter. This particular patient requires regular Botox injections to manage chronic back pain. Myoguide is used to advantage to ensure high treatment efficacy by enabling the clinicians to find the areas of hyperactive muscle fibres responsible for spasms leading to pain.

We are pleased to have started work on our software documentation software, specifically designed for creating electronic medical records (EMR) for the management of pain and spasticity. Myoguide DOC, allows creation of an EMR, which includes biometric data, injection documentation, spasticity and pain index tracking, billing documentation, and report generation. This is an industry leading step in the documentation of procedures and tracking of treatment efficacy. Myoguide DOC can be used in all clinics, for the tracking of treatment results. This is especially useful for documenting, but not limited to, neuromodulator injections, including needle EMG guided injection. Myoguide DOC will serve as a building block for future Myoguide products, such as Myoguide Plus, which will also include wireless multi-channel EMG signal handling, video synchronization, and remote device control.

Polycom Video conferencing system to be installed

SleepView Sleep Study System achieves a Canadian Medical Device license

We are pleased to announce that we have just received our Canadian Medical Device license for SleepView. SleepView, is a small, wrist worn device indicated for use in measuring, displaying and storing functional oxygen saturation of arterial hemoglobin and pulse rate. SleepView is a data logging system which samples every 4 seconds for up to 20 hours. The data can be reviewed by uploading to a PC. Data is displayed graphically and can be analyzed by setting thresholds and counting the number of times the values cross through the upper and lower thresholds. This is particularly useful in counting apnea, or periods where breathing stops, as the oxygen saturation, which is measured, drops. SleepView is a simple sleep study device that can be a useful screening tool for sleep apnea.

Myoguide Hits Target at MEDICA 2009> New Press Release!

Toronto, Dec. 8 – Intronix Technologies Corporation and its hand-held Myoguide™ system for more accurately targeting injections made a memorable debut in November at MEDICA 2009 in Düsseldorf, Germany. Visitors from Europe and around the world showed showed strong interest in the battery-driven Myoguide.

“We were exhibiting at MEDICA for the first time and introducing Myoguide which is a highly accurate neuromodulator injection instrument that uses a hypodermic needle electrode guided by electromyography (EMG) precision and safety,” explains Intronix CEO and founder, Dr. Evan Friedman. “Myoguide ensures that neuromodulator drugs used to help control the symptoms and pain associated with neuromuscular disease are going to the precise spot where they will have the most powerful and beneficial effect.”

Dr. Friedman’s hope was that potential distributors and users of Myoguide among the record-breaking 4,400 exhibitors and over 140,000 visitors from 100 countries who showed up at the annual four-day trade fair would take notice of Intronix and Myoguide. And indeed they did.

In the four days of MEDICA 2009, those manning the Intronix booth, housed in the Ontario pavilion, we met with over 125 visitors including 51 potential distributors from 20 different Countries, 3 OEM manufacturers and a European medical device research & development company according to Martin Tekela, Intronix’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

“We were hoping for a good response and those numbers exceeded our expectations ,” says Tekela. “I think one of the reasons for the good response is that we made sure our Product and Company News information could be easily found on the MEDICA website. With so many visitors at the show, that’s how people find you these days, by searching the website.”

What they found was a company that while new to MEDICA is no novice in the medical device world.

“Our company has been in business for over 25 years making EMG amplifiers and other systems mainly for research. But Myoguide is intended to be put in the hands of clinicians who are treating patients and are concerned about both the accuracy of their injections and their dosage.”

In the weeks following the fair in Düsseldorf, Intronix has been putting Myoguide through its paces for several serious potential users including a major drug manufacturer who saw Myoguide for the first time at MEDICA.

“Myoguide also makes it possible to reduce the concentrations and volumes of the injected drugs and still achieve effective results,” says CEO Friedman, “This can go a long way to reduce drug exposure, and diffusion side effects.”

Technically, Myoguide features a multifunction, single-channel EMG amplifier with a 20 mA stimulator, EMG signal display, instantaneous EMG analysis, as well as audio feedback. That feedback confirms entry into muscle for each and every injection. So clinicians can evaluate the current state of EMG activity in previously injected areas during re-injection appointments and thus make better treatment decisions.

Clinical Day with Myoguide

We like to keep our feet wet in the clinics to observe real practices. We had the privilege of watching over a variety of procedures, from headache protocol injections to management of pain, and spasticity. Myoguide performed admirably. Clear and concise EMG signals and EMG audio heralded entry into muscle, each and every time. I found an interesting advantage for Myoguide's built in EMG signal display. EMG audio is another useful clue, but it is the ability to view the signal itself that provides the finer focus. Clinicians can evaluate the current state of EMG activity in previously injected areas during re-injection appointments. This qualitative and quantitative evaluation can provide necessary information to formulate re-injection dosing decisions. This will ensure adequate amounts of drug can be re-injected, without the worry of overdosing the site. This can keep patients managed for their condition with a high degree of efficacy.

We were fortunate to have some procedures being carried out with a combination of ultrasound and needle EMG guidance. Identification of vital structure with ultrasound can be a very important part of certain procedures. There was some difficulty discerning the position of the needle, with ultrasound. Position was indicated more from visible tissue distortion as the needle penetrated, than by actual image. The needle EMG signal was a very helpful addition to the procedure to confirm position in muscle.

Myoguide's new MUTE feature has been a helpful addition as it allows the clinician to mute the EMG audio while waiting to inject. A simple button press activates the EMG audio at the preset level, in an instant. We are always looking for ways to improve the Myoguide system, and look forward to continued feedback from clinicians using our products.

Congratulations to Martin, our VP for Sales and Marketing and Joe, our Senior Production Manager and Regulatory Rep., for their fine performance at MEDICA, over the last week. We were there to reinforce our existing relationships, spend time with our great cooperative development partners, and make new contacts. Overall a great success. Special thanks to Dr. Johnson Lu, from Brillian Hightech Pte. , our representative in Singapore, for spending time with us in our booth. It was very nice seeing everyone again, and meeting new people. We had some very productive discussions about Myoguide and will be following up some great opportunities in the weeks to come.

Intronix is at MEDICA 2009, in Dusseldorf, Germany, for this week. We have had two press releases for our MEDICA adventure. While I've sent out press releases to medical device oriented press, It's difficult to get the press to notice, as they don't know us yet. We've been in the MEDICA newsletter two times in their "innovations" section. Just starting to get the press familiar with who we are and what we do. MedGadget found us by themselves. Hopefully this will be a trend, as we would like to get the word out. The Intronix team has set up our luxurious corner booth, and we'll be ready to go when MEDICA opens its doors to the industry tomorrow. We will be launching Myoguide onto the international scene. We did bring a few our new SleepView, wrist mounted, sleep study systems, to show to a select few, but the main focus will be on Myoguide.

SleepView Sleep Study System

We finally came up with a name for our "Sleep-at-Home" sleep study system. We have registered Sleepview.ca to document the details of our wrist mounted sleep study system. SleepView is still in R&D, but we hope to complete it and bring it to market as soon as possible.

Sleepview can be used to monitor apnea periods, and pulse rate, while you "sleep at home". We're excited to promote this great screening tool, with its companion software, to help your doctor determine who might benefit from full sleep studies in the clinic, and who would not.

We had the privilege of going through our regular re-certification ISO audit, which happens every third year in our yearly ISO auditing cycle. This is a top to bottom audit covering all aspects of our regulatory system. Our quality system is registered to both ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 13485:2003. BSI is our quality systems registrar accredited under the Canadian Medical Devices Conformity Assessment System (CMDCAS). These audits are required to maintain our ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 13485:2003 registrations. We have regular internal ISO, FDA, and CE audits to ensure we are performing according to regulation. This is coupled with our regular annual external ISO audit by BSI. We are pleased to have been recommended for re-registration by our ISO auditors at BSI. We have also been recommended for ISO 9001:2008 registration, as we updated to the latest rendition of ISO 9001. We will be updating our website as soon as we receive our new certificates. Intronix Press Release makes the MEDICA Newsletter!

As you may know, Intronix will be at MEDICA, in Dusseldorf, Germany in November. We just made the MEDICA International Newsletter with our press release. Apparently, we are possibly the first Canadian company to make this newsletter. Check out the innovations section! The editors are interested in Myoguide and our new Sleep-at-Home system. We have designed a wrist mounted data logging system that monitors oxygen saturation levels, amongst other parameters, for use by patients, at home. It serves as a screening system for health care providers to decide whether the subject would benefit from a more detailed sleep study. This device presents a simple and easy to use evaluation system for patients to use while they sleep in their own bed. Our press release was sent out to over 20 media outlets in the US, internet search engines, and healthcare news feeds.
